October letter from Pastor Nickel

SSlogo2Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As we celebrated Rally Day on Holy Cross Sunday, the theme verse for our 2015–2016 Christian education year is 1 Corinthians 1:18: “For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”

Unlike all other religions, Christianity is not a contrivance of mankind. Christianity is, in fact, the very truth and wisdom of God Himself. According to God’s plan of salvation, the Son of God Himself became flesh and blood, and by His suffering and death on the cross in our place, He reconciled humanity to God. So, unlike the claims of other religions, we know that we are saved by faith in Christ’s work on the cross, without any works of our own. We only know of the Father’s grace through the Holy Spirit’s revelation in the Word. That is what St. Paul means by “the word of the cross.” And the “word of the cross” is the basis of our Christian unity because our salvation is founded solely on God’s grace in Christ’s work, not on anything any of us has done.

I encourage you to express your Christian unity by praying for those who are serving in our Holy Cross Christian education program this year, including:

  • Andrea & Emma Wiepert (pre-K & K),
  • Ruth Marzano (3rd-4th grades),
  • Peter Olsen, Tom Marzano & Paula Cocco (5th-6th grades),
  • Pastor Nickel (7th-8th grade confirmation),
  • Dave Chalmers, Ken Grek, Sam Gugliuzza & Sarah Craig (High School youth),
  • Bill & Cameron Cook (music),
  • Ken & Beth Handley (adult class),
  • Linda Cummings, Wendy Shelton, Sue Fay Allen, Lindsay Gugliuzza, Diana Zubrzycki, Holly Standish, Sue Tichy, Linda Ponivas, Nina Kirkland, Cameron Cook, Mary Ann Schettler, Jen Dulaney (substitutes and helpers),
  • and Pat Ludwig & Linda Cummings (Superintendent & Assistant).

May the Lord bless these servants with diligence, wisdom and skill, and may we be drawn closer together in Christ through our prayers.

Peace to you in Jesus’ name,

Pastor Nickel
